The SEO Sprint Newsletter
A newsletter on how SEOs can work better with development teams.
Hello, my name is Adam Gent and I’ve worked in SEO for 9 years.
For the last 2 years, I have worked as a Product Manager at DeepCrawl working with enterprise-engineering teams to develop, build and release features for technical SEOs.
Why create this newsletter?
As part of the PM role, I interviewed SEO professionals to better understand their pain points and how DeepCrawl could better solve these problems.
One key trend our team identified was that many SEOs found it difficult to get recommendations implemented.
A study supported this trend by finding that SEO teams wait a long time to get high priority actions implemented.
“The average SEO at a big company has been waiting over six months for their highest priority technical change and doesn’t anticipate seeing it deployed for at least another six months” - Will Critchlow
As I become more experienced in a Product Manager role I began to see the skills and training I’d received on how to work with development teams could help technical SEOs get things done.
For example, a study found that product and engineering teams who use Agile delivery methods to release customer-focused software are 2x likely to succeed.
“Agile projects are statistically 2X more likely to succeed, and 1/3 less likely to fail than waterfall projects.” - Standish Group Chaos Study
The product industry has transformed how it works with development teams, and other stakeholders, to release customer-facing products.
Transformation of Technical SEO
To be successful in getting recommendations, I think it is now important that SEOs specialists also transform how they work with development teams.
I call this new way of working Technical SEO Delivery.
I have created The SEO Sprint Newsletter to educate and empower SEO professionals to learn how they can use Technical SEO Delivery to work with development teams to get high priority actions implemented.
How frequent is the newsletter?
I plan to write as much as I can each month but it will be juggling home life and client work.
What will you write about?
In this newsletter I will be writing about a range of topics, including:
Product Management practices and principles which are relevant to technical SEO specialists.
Agile delivery frameworks that are commonly used in the development community.
How to develop a clear technical vision, strategy and roadmap.
Lessons learned developing and managing a backlog.
Breaking down projects into small actionable tickets.
How to write user stories that don’t cause confusion.
Validating and testing ideas in a fast-paced environment.
All these topics are aimed at educating and empowering SEO specialists on how to work with development teams to get things done.
